People seem to have enough difficulty parking head-in - given the number accidents resulting from brake vs gas pedal confusion. Backing in, with kids getting out of the car next to you, seems to be an accident prone situation.
1 point by MarkLJ 46 days ago | link | parent | on: One-way Streets Becoming Two-way Streets? I like the idea of wider sidewalks downtown with sidewalk cafes. I don't like the angle parking especially not back-in angle parking. Sure you could fit more cars parked in one block but I'd like to see an emphasis on fewer cars and more walkers in an area that features sidewalk cafes.

The flour tortilla used on the burritos is thin and malleable, and the corn chips served on the side are thick and crunchy. Good salsa, good-tasting meat... I'll want to sample it a few more times, but this may quickly become one of my favorite restaurants in the area.

Using this software is still an "experiment"... there have been some issues reported, but hopefully not entirely detrimental issues. I personally like it mostly because it seems to clean and to-the-point, though as such it does lack some features one might usually expect.
How do you make line feeds in this thing. My previous post would look much more poetic, much like a real Jeff Raasch article, if the line spacing remained.

And Growth in Iowa has not been all that hot. What insane reasoning could be behind this growth in spending. Culvers predecessor was from the same party and seemed to budget slightly more responsibly.
It is not like we are a big state where everyone wants to live. Like CA, or IL. We can't really afford to add all these taxes and fees.

Though if they can make a business case. Nice riverwalk will bring people downtown to walk along the flowering posies and buy trinkets at gift shops, bringing great profit to CR. I would suspect thought, that the riverwalk would just redistribute where the $ are spent rather then create new revenue. And municipalities are always wildly overoptimistic about projects like these. (It will break even in 5 minutes! -- But in reality it could take several decades.) Downtown San Jose was like this, though I think 30 years of planning and finally, finally things are starting to turn around for DT San Jose -- I don't think they are breaking even though

The city council is no longer replying to residents AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS. They will still talk with residents before the meeting, after the meeting, or whenever.
Sounds like most issues that residents bring up are better handled by city staff other than the council anyway.
Regrettably, I've never been to a city council meeting, but not out of lack of interest. I am unable to attend on Wednesday evenings, the only night on which meetings are held. I once asked city manager Mr. Prosser if they could consider rotating which day the meetings are held on, but they evidently want to ensure at least one full week in between meetings for processing paperwork. (In short, no.)
The whole area was dark and depressing. They really did an awesome job rennovating the mall. Even though it's perhaps not as good as it could be, it's far better than it used to be.

There wasn't one at Westdale, at least not a cohesive one. Lindale added one at the end of one of the short wings and it seems to have worked.

What else could the state do to increase revenue?
1 point by MarkLJ 66 days ago | link | parent | on: What should be done about downtown (if anything) ? I'd like to see the city raise some of the money for a Riverwalk project from citizens and local businesses. Give us the opportunity to buy a brick or tile, some unit that can be purchased for $100, $1000, etc. The Riverwalk Investors Organization (Rio)

One reason to bother might be that I could reduce my monthly expenses by not owning a car. But I go to other places besides the office. It may be conceivable that I could get to all of these other places (or at least close enough to them) via the bus, but the amount of time it would take would almost undoubtedly make the whole situation not worth it.
The reason I love public transportation in, say, St. Louis or Boston is that the cities are much larger, and driving and parking is much harder. Spending 45 minutes on the bus/subway/whatever makes sense if it would have taken you an hour and lots of frustration to drive, but it doesn't make sense if it would have taken you ten minutes and no frustration to drive.
3 points by groundhog 67 days ago | link | parent | on: What should be done about downtown (if anything) ? The idea of the riverwalk stores/living space is good. The train and the crap on the west side of 380 is a killer too. It is kind of awkwardly laid out (380 access) and there are some pretty crappy buildings downtown. That said tho, the Brewnost event at the Czech museum was an awesome eventbecause of the river, and some nice scenery. As said in previous posts, a little planning and work to entice retailers would probably go far.

Hmm, well, the idea sort of breaks down after the initial concept :-) At least a system based at the downtown Ground Transportation System that goes to North Liberty, Coralville, Marion and Hiawatha. High-Speed of course
